What happens when the career you thought you were meant to have suddenly doesn’t feel right?
Sometimes, finding your calling isn’t a straight path. Sometimes it involves changing majors, trying different careers, taking a few wrong turns, spending way too much money on things you no longer need, and figuring things out one messy step at a time.
For Laura Kate Amrhein, owner of Sweet Stirrings and host of The Mixing Bowl Diaries, discovering her passion for baking was anything but an overnight success story. Her journey began with a childhood dream of becoming an interior designer and eventually led her through college, dog grooming, cake decorating classes, culinary school, late nights, motherhood, and countless cakes,
In the end, what started as a hobby became a business—and eventually a career.
This is the story of how Sweet Stirrings began!
From Interior Design Dreams to an Unexpected Detour
The Career Laura Kate Thought She Wanted
From about middle school onward, Laura Kate was convinced she would become an interior designer. She loved decorating, spatial design, and creativity, and interior design seemed like the perfect career. Throughout high school, she was busy studying, playing sports, participating in clubs, and taking on leadership roles. She graduated as valedictorian and entered college feeling confident that she knew exactly where her future was headed.
Then things started to change.
During her first year of prerequisites for design school, Laura Kate began to realize that she didn't have the artistic background many of her classmates had. Still, being accepted into the competitive design program felt like confirmation that she was on the right path. She even had the opportunity to work for a high-end interior designer in Baton Rouge.
But something still didn't feel right.
When Your Gut Tells You to Change Direction
Eventually, Laura Kate had to acknowledge a feeling she couldn't ignore: interior design wasn't where she was supposed to be. Changing direction wasn't easy. Her parents had already invested thousands of dollars in art supplies, a laptop, and design software for her education. But after her first week of design school, she knew she couldn't continue. She made the difficult decision to leave the program.
For someone who typically overthought decisions and relied on other people for guidance, this was a major moment. It was also the first major decision she made entirely on her own.
And instead of regret, she felt an enormous sense of relief. The problem was that she now had no idea what she wanted to do.
Finding a Creative Outlet Through Cake Decorating
One Cake Decorating Class Changed Everything
After leaving design school, Laura Kate bounced between different majors and career possibilities, including general studies, dietetics, and nursing. None of them felt right.
At the same time, she desperately needed a creative outlet. Her mom and sister had taken cake decorating classes years earlier, so Laura Kate decided to give cake decorating a try. She took one class. And she was hooked!
Soon, she was making cakes for anyone who would let her. Instead of spending her extra money on typical college purchases, she spent it on cake decorating tools and classes.
Her apartment kitchen was too small for her growing hobby, so she would travel home on weekends to her parents' house and turn the kitchen into her cake studio.
What began as something fun quickly became something she couldn't stop thinking about!
The Opportunity That Opened a Door
Around the same time, Laura Kate became engaged to her husband, Dustin, and started planning her wedding.
Naturally, the wedding cake was one of the most important details to her. She found a local custom cake shop, Sweet Impressions, and knew the owner, Mr. Carl, could create the cake she envisioned. During her cake tasting, Laura Kate casually mentioned that she had been taking cake decorating classes and loved making cakes.
That small comment turned into a life-changing opportunity! Mr. Carl asked if she wanted a job. She already had several jobs, but she didn't care. She wanted the opportunity to learn.
Although she only worked there for a few months before her wedding, the experience gave her a glimpse into the professional cake world.
She also made her first wedding cake for friends that same summer. It wasn't perfect, and she freely admits she didn't know everything she was doing yet. But the experience gave her something incredibly important: confidence.
Learning, Experimenting, and Growing in Austin
A New City, a New Chapter
After getting married, Laura Kate and Dustin moved to Austin, Texas. She still wasn't sure what she wanted to do professionally, but cake decorating remained the one thing she continued doing simply because she loved it.
While working other jobs, she kept making cakes on the side. She joined a cake club, took classes, watched online tutorials, and taught herself new techniques. Austin's cake community gave her access to opportunities she hadn't had before, including competitions, cake expos, and classes with well-known cake artists. She even placed in cake competitions several years in a row.
That environment pushed her to keep learning. And the more she learned, the more she realized just how much she loved cake decorating.
Turning a Hobby Into a Real Business
Eventually, Laura Kate decided to advertise wedding cakes on The Knot—even though she had only made one wedding cake at that point.
Her approach was simple: She would figure it out.
She rented kitchen space from a restaurant during its off-hours so she could legally produce cakes and obtain the necessary health inspection and licensing. Then she took another big step. She made Sweet Stirrings official!
She formed an LLC, created a logo, had shirts monogrammed, and launched a website! Even her first professional photo shoot was a DIY project.
It was scrappy, imperfect, and very much the beginning of something.
Realizing Baking Could Become a Career
The Decision to Go to Culinary School
Even as Sweet Stirrings grew, Laura Kate still felt pressure to follow the traditional path.
Go to college. Get a degree. Get a job. Get married. Have kids.
But deep down, she knew she didn't want to return to school simply to get a degree she didn't care about. Instead, she made another bold decision.
If she was going to pursue a career in food, she wanted to become a pastry chef.
She enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu in Austin. For the first time, she felt completely certain about what she wanted to do.
Finally Knowing What She Was Meant to Do
Culinary school became one of the most enjoyable periods of Laura Kate's life.
She woke up early, studied for tests, worked long hours, and still made cakes on the side. But unlike her previous educational experiences, she loved it. She wasn't simply working toward a degree because she felt like she was supposed to. She was learning about something she genuinely cared about.
She also worked at a cake studio, where she learned about the business side of running a cake operation—including production, timelines, client communication, employee communication, and delivery.
Her internship at the Driskill Hotel in Austin provided another valuable lesson. She loved the pastry work and learned a tremendous amount, but she realized that the restaurant and hotel lifestyle wasn't what she wanted.
She wanted a small cake studio!
When Sweet Stirrings Started Becoming a Business
The Power of Word of Mouth
During her years in Austin, Sweet Stirrings began receiving more and more orders. Many customers came through word of mouth—coworkers, clients, classmates, church friends, running groups, and people who saw her cake photos online.
Eventually, complete strangers began contacting her for wedding cakes simply because they had seen her work. That was a turning point.
Laura Kate began to realize that Sweet Stirrings could actually become a business. At the time, however, she still thought of it as something she would do on the side.
She assumed she would always have a "real job" while making cakes for extra money.
She didn't yet realize how much bigger the dream could become.
The Make-or-Break Moment
Moving Home and Becoming a Full-Time Baker
After approximately six and a half years in Austin, Laura Kate and Dustin were expecting their first child. They decided to move back home to Zachary, Louisiana, where their families lived.
The move created a major crossroads.
Laura Kate had to decide whether she would continue juggling multiple jobs and cake decorating—or finally take the leap and make Sweet Stirrings her full-time career.
She was about eight months pregnant when they moved home, and she immediately began taking as many cake orders as she could. Even after her son Jackson was born, she continued accepting orders.
Looking back, Laura Kate acknowledges that this season was chaotic. She sometimes wishes she had slowed down and spent more time simply enjoying being a first-time mom. But she was also incredibly excited.
Sweet Stirrings had become more than a hobby. It was now her business!
Building a Business From a Tiny Kitchen
In the beginning, Laura Kate worked out of the couple's small 800-square-foot rental home.
Eventually, she found a commercial kitchen willing to rent space to her by the hour.
The business continued growing primarily through word of mouth, but she also began investing more time into social media, advertising, bridal shows, and relationships with other wedding vendors. She took almost every opportunity that came her way. And she worked constantly.
There were countless late nights and all-nighters, but she was passionate about what she was building. In many ways, it felt like she had two babies at once: her new child and her growing business.
The Reality Behind Building a Dream
Work-Life Balance Is an Ongoing Journey
One of the biggest lessons Laura Kate has learned throughout her journey is that building a business doesn't automatically mean finding perfect work-life balance.
In fact, balancing motherhood, marriage, and business ownership has been one of the hardest parts of her journey. With two children and a husband who traveled frequently for work, there were plenty of competing responsibilities.
Owning a business gave Laura Kate flexibility for school, sports, piano lessons, doctor's appointments, and everyday family life. But flexibility doesn't mean easy. There have still been sacrifices, long days, and difficult seasons.
What Sweet Stirrings Taught Laura Kate About Following a Dream
Your Path Doesn't Have to Be Straight
Looking back, Laura Kate's journey includes plenty of twists and turns. On paper, it might look like a collection of unrelated experiences. But each chapter taught her something.
Even the years and money she once considered wasted ultimately helped shape who she became. Her story is proof that sometimes the path to your dream doesn't make sense until you look back at it!
A Hobby Can Become Something More
For anyone who has ever wondered whether a hobby could become a business, Laura Kate's story is a powerful reminder that it absolutely can. Sweet Stirrings didn't begin with a storefront or a huge team.
It began with a cake decorating class. It grew in tiny kitchens, borrowed commercial kitchens, late-night work sessions, cake competitions, word-of-mouth referrals, and a willingness to keep learning. The business evolved gradually.
And eventually, Laura Kate realized that the thing she loved doing could become the career she had been searching for all along.
The Recipe Behind Sweet Stirrings
There isn't one secret ingredient that created Sweet Stirrings.
Instead, the recipe was made up of curiosity, creativity, courage, persistence, education, family support, and a willingness to take a chance before everything was figured out.
Laura Kate didn't always know what she was doing. She didn't have all the answers.
She didn't have a perfect business plan from the beginning. But she kept learning.
She kept making cakes. She kept saying yes to opportunities. And most importantly, she kept following the thing that made her happy.
Dreams Don't Have to Start Perfectly
Laura Kate's story is a reminder that dreams rarely begin in perfect circumstances. Sometimes they begin in a tiny apartment kitchen. Sometimes they begin with a hobby.
Sometimes they begin after realizing the career you thought you wanted isn't actually right for you.
Sometimes they involve changing your mind more than once. And sometimes they require you to take a leap before you feel completely ready. Sweet Stirrings grew from exactly that kind of beginning.
What started as a creative outlet eventually became a full-time business, a career, and a dream worth pursuing.
If there's one thing Laura Kate hopes listeners take away from her story, it's this:
Your dream doesn't have to start perfectly for it to become something beautiful.
You just have to be willing to start!
